How to Hang a Gallery Wall
A gallery wall is the perfect way to showcase your personal style while creating an eye-catching statement in your home. An alternative to showing a single artwork or matching series, hanging a variety of different artworks creates an interplay of color and texture, with each artwork adding something new to the composition. Whether you have many collected artworks or are just starting out with a couple pieces, a gallery wall is a great opportunity to display your art collection in a unique and fun way. There are truly endless possibilities, so here are our tips to create a compelling and intriguing gallery wall.
The first step is measuring your space. You want to make sure all of the artworks will be able to fit with enough spacing in between them. We recommend mapping out the sizes of the artworks on the wall with masking tape to check the spacing in addition to laying the artworks out on the floor to see how the arrangement looks before hanging. Our tip is to leave at least 5” between the artworks and to stagger their placement to create a more interesting composition. We love to arrange gallery walls in more unconventional layouts, not fitting into a perfect shape, for a unique and personalized feel.
For the gallery wall pictured here, the Radiant Square was hung in the middle of the wall at eye level and then the remaining artworks were hung around it, encircling the center artwork. This layout fills the wall with enough spacing between the artworks, creating a balanced composition. The repeated colors connect the artworks, while the size and orientations of the pieces create visual interest.
To curate a gallery wall, we recommend uniting the artworks by a theme or common elements. This could be the color, materials, texture, medium, or even the content of the artworks. Having repeated elements ties the artworks together, creating a more cohesive gallery wall. When sourcing artwork, we love to mix mediums, sizes, and shapes to create a collected feel. Adding in a square or round artwork adds a playful and unexpected element to the layout and including both portrait and landscape oriented works creates diversity. Most of all, have fun with your gallery wall! Let it flow organically and don’t be constrained by too many rules- it’s your wall!
In this gallery wall, all the artwork adheres to a color scheme of blue, grey, and black. Despite the varying designs and styles, the gallery wall looks curated due to the repeated shapes, colors, and mediums. The circular Impressions piece anchors the composition with its deep, dark color and the graphic shapes from the silkscreens interact to guide your eye around the arrangement.
