Designer Spotlight: Stay Interiors
Committed to clean lines, airy interiors, and layered materials, Nishia Shubert of Stay Interiors creates curated and bright spaces that are as inviting as they are functional. Based in Los Angeles, Nishia is greatly inspired by southern California and has designed homes from Los Angeles to San Diego. With her holistic design approach, Nishia makes sure her designs are intentional yet unique, giving value to each aspect of the space. We sat down with Nishia to learn more about her design process, sources of inspiration, and journey to becoming an interior designer.
Always loving interior design, Nishia never even knew that she could pursue it as a career. Feeling unfulfilled in her corporate job, Nishia was looking for a career pivot and her husband encouraged her to explore interior design. Nishia explained, “I took some evening classes after work and after about 6 months, decided it was something I really wanted to pursue. I took a design and sales position at a luxury tile and stone showroom where I constantly asked all the questions and absorbed as much as I could from everyone.” Then once she had the know-how and experience, Nishia started Stay Interiors so she could bring her design aesthetic to life.
Los Angeles has such diversity and charm throughout its many neighborhoods, with each area boasting different cultures, landscapes, and architectural styles. From Atwater Village to Inglewood, Nishia has completed projects throughout Los Angeles, with each varying in mood and feeling. By integrating elements inspired by the location of the home, Nishia mirrors the character of the neighborhood in her projects. “I’m always looking for ways to create visually captivating spaces by mixing different materials, textures, and colors that reflect the surroundings and the clients,” Nishia elaborated. From 100+ year old Craftsmans to 1930s Spanish style homes to modern new builds, Nishia’s interiors are also relevant to the style of the homes they inhabit, celebrating the architecture of the home.
When sourcing art, Nishia starts with her client and their taste. She asks, “Should the art be subdued, earthy, and calming or colorful, bold, and unexpected? Do they like minimalist and graphic art or do they gravitate towards ethereal and vintage inspired art?” Noting the personal nature of art, Nishia explained “we mix the client’s art with new pieces so it’s important that the colors, texture, and subject complement one another.” When asked about working with Visual Contrast, Nishia replied, “I had the pleasure of visiting the showroom with some fellow designer friends and it was a great experience to learn about what inspires them, their creative processes, and how truly custom we can make each art piece. They have such a beautiful assortment of artwork that can fit perfectly in different spaces and styles”
