Visual Contrast x Coco Republic
This year we had the amazing opportunity to create an exclusive art collection for Coco Republic’s flagship San Francisco store opening in September 2022. Since this was the Australian lifestyle brand’s introduction to the United States, we had to be sure to encapsulate the mood, attitude, and atmosphere of Coco Republic in our artwork. Inspired by the neutral tones, curvy geometric forms, and natural finishes of Coco Republic, we created this material-forward collection to let the art elements and craftsmanship speak for themselves. We looked to the shape, colour, and texture of their furniture and furnishings to dictate our designs. Curvaceous furniture led to circular forms, the mixing of materials gave rise to layering papers and textiles, and organic forms prompted abstracted shapes.
With a focus on materials, these handmade artworks mimic the imperfections of nature through their deconstructed and raw quality, but remain sophisticated with their contemporary designs. The collection featured artworks in a variety of media, from pumice stone and acrylic to silkscreens to layered handmade papers on canvas.
With abstract shapes in varying hues of blue, the Blue Paper Cut Outs series uses colour and overlapping to create depth in the composition. To create these silkscreens, irregular shapes were cut from paper and layered while silkscreening to use as a stencil. Playful and intriguing, these prints look best hung together in a grid.
The Impressions collection focuses on texture and three-dimensionality. The sage diptych pops out against the dark wall, creating a moody tone, and the slightly differing compositions of the pieces complement one another. The terracotta colourway, developed especially for Coco Republic, enhances the warm-toned accents of the Calacatta viola marble coffee table and the rough texture contrasts with all the smooth finishes in the room.
Overlapped Textiles uses layered pieces of linen and handmade papers of varying textures to fill the composition. The neutral colour scheme allows for the texture to be the focus of this piece, prompting the viewer to come in for a closer look to examine the different finishes. Our goal was to complement elements of the interior design and not overpower them with our artwork.
The Tan Sculpted Panel emulates ancient pottery with its rustic cracks and carved surface. The geometric design contrasts with the uneven outlines of the shapes, lending to its antique and handmade quality. With a warm brown tone modelled after the Mulberry sofa, this piece complements an interior with a neutral colour scheme, providing texture and dimension.
Our intention was for this collection to be timeless and intriguing, playing on the modern simplicity of Coco Republic and accentuating the furnishings. To see these artworks in person, visit the Coco Republic store located at Union Square in San Francisco.
